Assigning Patrols! [ALL THUNDERCLAN]

If there was one thing Blizzardclaw was grateful to his parents for, it was their 'insistence' on him waking up at dawn every day. It was the ONLY thing he was grateful for, in his mother's case. It was amazingly easy for him to transition to being deputy. Blizzardclaw had expected to find opposition to his orders, or even problems setting up patrols.

But no, it all came naturally to him, like he was supposed to be doing this. He knew his Clanmates well enough to know who enjoyed being paired up with who, who would cause problems or distractions. The only cats who disrespected him were the cats who did it before (cough cough Whitepaw cough cough), and he knew how to deal with them.

So it was with a casual eye that he raked over his Clanmates as they milled about, waiting for his orders. Even with the Dirt Thunderpath off limits until further notice and some of his Clanmates ill (don't think about Lightpaw- oh his poor precious baby it was all his fault she was sick), he still had his pick of cats to put on patrol.

Deciding, he yowled nice and clearly for them all to hear, "ALRIGHT, TIME TO SHUT YOUR TRAPS AND LISTEN UP!", and they actually did, turning to stare at him in eerie unison. "Okay, I need two hunting patrols and one border patrol. Flametail, I want you to take two cats of your own choice near the Sand Pit to hunt. Don't overhunt the place and be careful if you decide to go up into the trees."

Most of that went without saying, but if Flametail decided to take some apprentices with him, the warning would be important. "Tigerfang, take three cats with you to the Thick Oaks to make sure RiverClan hasn't developed a taste for birds. I trust they haven't, but you know what to do if you catch any on our side of the territory."

Now for the fun part. "I'm leading the other hunting patrol to the stream. On a day like this, there's bound to be a bunch of fresh-kill out for drinks. Any objections?"

Despite it being early, the heat from the morning sun was borderline unbearable. Fallenstar padded out of her den, giving a luxurious stretch at the entrance as she felt the warmth seep into her waking muscles. With a shake of her obsidian fur, the ThunderClan leader joined the clump of Clanmates gathered around her deputy.

I made the right decision, choosing Blizzardclaw as deputy. Fallenstar told herself with a purr rumbling deep in her throat.

Her emerald eyes glowed and her ears pricked with anticipation at the names the great gray cat called. She felt a pang, however, when she remembered Wrenstep, Leopardstorm, Pumpkinpaw and Lightpaw were sick from the spoiled prey. The leader let out a soft sigh. Not even prey was to be trusted -- and it was greenleaf, the time of the year when prey was supposed to be plentiful and fat.

". . . Any objections?"

At her deputy's words, Fallenstar perked up and let out a soft trill.

"I wouldn't mind joining a patrol, Blizzardclaw," The black she-cat meowed politely. "Where do you want me?"

A black shadow flickered at the edge of his vision, and Blizzardclaw barely gave it a half-glance before looking back at the other cats. He'd expected Fallenstar to have joined them earlier, but he guessed the heat was enough to keep her hidden in her den. 'She should be lucky she doesn't have long fur. That plus the black color would probably give her heatstroke every greenleaf.' he thought a bit grouchily.

The she-cat made a noise that made him give her more of an actual look than the previous half-glance. "I wouldn't mind joining a patrol, Blizzardclaw." she meowed politely, and he didn't even try to restrain the playful eyeroll. They'd pushed each other in puddles and wrestled together in mud. You'd think they were a bit beyond such snooty things as manners. "Where do you want me?"

He grinned at her, eyes glittering with good humor and just the slightest hint of "Come at me bro". "Oh you're already coming with me. I've already decided, executive decision, you have no choice in the matter."

When the great gray tabby rolled his amber eyes, Fallenstar purred. She was glad they were good enough friends to feel uncomfortable at the polite exchanges "normal" Clanmates sometimes used. The ThunderClan leader felt a warm feeling in the pit of her stomach as she reflected that her deputy was also like her littermate -- Yes. Blizzardclaw was the littermate Fallenstar never had. When the deputy told her where she was to be headed, then added something about executive decisions and her having no choice in the matter, she was unable to hide a loud laugh.

"Executi-- No choi--" She sputtered between giggles, "I'm your leader, you gray fuzzball! Or had you forgotten? I outrank you!"

The leader bounded toward the fern tunnel with her tail up, bumping her friend gently as she passed.

Executive decision, indeed!

Aha, mission accomplished! It took a split second of staring at him, probably to think 'Did he really just say that?', before Fallenstar burst into laughter. Blizzardclaw gave a self-satisfied grin and flicked his tail to their Clanmates, allowing them to split up into their own conversations and/or duties. "Executi- No choi-" Semi-words broke through her giggles before she could calm down enough to speak. "I'm your leader, you gray fuzzball! Or had you forgotten? I outrank you!"

She bounded away from him, bumping him gently with her shoulder as she passed, and Blizzardclaw called out to her, "Only technically, my friend! Because if you remember correctly, I'm also older than you-" only by a few days, yes, but still older -"and therefore you have to do what I say. And we still need one or two others to make it an official patrol rather than just an outing. I suppose I could drag Whitepaw, but frankly I wouldn't put it passed her to cross the stream and start trouble just to annoy me. So instead..."

He closed his eyes and spun in a circle, stopping and pointing in a random direction. "You!" The deputy opened his eyes and smiled brightly when he realized who it was. "Cloudwhisker, my very first apprentice and one of my dearest companions! You have the honor, nay privilege, to be cordially invited on a hunting patrol with myself and our esteemed furball of a leader! Congratulations!"

Cloudwhiskers neck hairs stood on end. Her on a hunting patrol again? After she posiened the clan oh but a few cycles again. But she wasn't one to turn down her, ex-mentor and crush. That would be stupid, mouse-brained even. So with a nod, she got to her paws and walked over to her fluffy ex-mentor. "Sure! I'm sure the pleasure is all mine!" she trembled awkwardly but the sentence was crisply said.  She sad down and laid her tail over her forepaws. 

"I see this fur-ball is doing his duty for a change" she joked quietly, he voice was shallow but not quiet enough to be unheard.
