Speckledleaf
A fluffy brown spotted tom with a white stripe on his nose. | ||
Tom | 36 Moons | Aloof |
Riverclan | Medicine Cat | Sensitive |
[break]
Often mistaken for a she-cat based simply on his pretty looks and soft voice, Speckledleaf can be easily identified based on the unique two-part white stripe that stretches over the top of his nose. Light green eyes peer out at the world with a veiled curiosity and an intelligent glimmer, just waiting to discover its secrets. At a glance, Speckledleaf appears much like one would expect a long haired brown tabby to look. The delicacies and subtle waves to both the color and texture of his pelt can only be appreciated at a closer distance.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Looking deeper would reveal the life and habits of Speckledleaf based simply on the earthy, herbal scent that clings to their fur at all hours of the day, and the bits of fresh (and sometimes partially chewed) leafs and petals that stick in between tufts of thick brown hair. His paws are often flecked with bits of dirt and grass from digging to get to the best roots and the moistest bits of moss at the riverbanks. There is seldom a time when evidence of Speckledleaf’s private duties as a Medicine Cat are not somewhere on his form—be it the soothing scent of chamomile clinging to his fur after reorganizing his medicine supplies, or bits of cobwebs dangling from too-long white whiskers following a restocking excursion into the woods and tall reeds.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Even with the additions of Speckledleaf’s profession into their coat, Speckledleaf does his best to appear neat and tidy, and ensures that he dedicates at least a portion of his day to sharing tongues with other Riverclanners. With the help of clan mates and a little extra work on his own, Speckledleaf still somehow manages to appear presentable, even with the ever-present evidence of his role glued to his fur.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Warm. Known for getting involved in the daily happenings of the camp, Speckledleaf is uncharacteristically close with his clan mates, and does what he can to share in their lives and get to know them. Because of his open and friendly nature, Speckledleaf has been described as ‘warm’ by many of his clan mates, and even those outside of Riverclan from time to time. His smile has a way of relaxing those around him, and his soothing voice can easily put worries to rest.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Sensitive. Though it’s often difficult to tell how Speckledleaf is feeling or what he is thinking, he is actually a deeply sensitive individual, and quite vulnerable to feedback of any kind. Because of his sensitive nature, it can sometimes lead to misunderstandings between Speckledleaf and other cats, as he will begin to second-guess himself as well as various social queues. Speckledleaf values the opinions and thoughts of his clan mates and strives to make the best of things—but his fear of failure and sensitivity to it sometimes hold him back from achieving all that he could.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Secretive. While he isn’t a liar—Speckledleaf will often times find himself avoiding sharing things with other cats. It could be something minor, as to a bird he saw flying far off in the distance, or it could be something very weighted—such as a prophecy from Starclan. Speckledleaf is not in the habit of sharing secrets of any kind, and he prefers to organize all of his thoughts on certain matters before sharing them. His secretive nature is well known, as he is quiet and withdrawn, but Speckledleaf’s complete willingness to withhold information from others—be they inside Riverclan or not—hasn’t made itself known yet.[BREAK][BREAK]
Unforgiving. Once wronged, Speckledleaf is loath to forgive another. His deeply sensitive nature makes it nearly impossible for him to forget past wrongs, particularly if they were personal affronts to either himself or those that he cares for.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Romantic. Forbidden from having a mate and fathering kits, Speckledleaf’s “romantic” nature is expressed in other, less intimate ways. He never truly intends to come across as a romantic, but at his core, Speckledleaf shares many of the same classic ideals. He believes in loving strongly and caring for one another and for providing for others. His warm nature often combines with his romanticized role as a caretaker, and if he notices someone from the clan is struggling, Speckledleaf will make the time to approach them and see if there’s anything he can do to help. This has led to touchy misunderstandings and unrequited affections in the past—but Speckledleaf was quick to distance himself and remain true to the code.

[BREAK][BREAK]Strengths[BREAK]
[BREAK]
Strong-Willed. – When something needs to be done, Speckledleaf will see to it that the task is accomplished, one way or another. It’s difficult to deter him from anything, in part because he doesn’t tell anyone what he’s up to.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Sharp Nose. – From an early age, Speckledleaf had a very sharp nose. He was able to pick scents up faster and with more accuracy than other cats his age, and when he began to be able to identify plants with just as much accuracy as prey, it was no surprise that he was taken on as Pineheart’s apprentice.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Quick-Witted. – Speckledleaf’s mind has always been faster than his mouth and paws. He can memorize things such as places, patterns, techniques, and names at an astounding rate. His brain is constantly working, and he places a high value on both learning and teaching.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Deft Paws. – Perhaps viewed as more useful on a hunter or warrior, Speckledleaf still benefits greatly from his dexterous paws. He is an expert with very small, fine movements, such as the ones needed to gently scrape infected tissue away from healthy skin while causing minimal damage. He is very good with his paws.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Memory. Speckledleaf rarely forgets things, and for the most part this reflects back on his life as a strength. His quick learning skills paired with his impeccable memory make this tom’s brain a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, his memory tends to affect him negatively when it comes to socialization.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Weaknesses[BREAK][BREAK]
Sensitive. - A naturally sensitive tom, Speckledleaf is easily deeply moved by events in his life. This fact of his nature has been taken advantage of several times and has led to more than a few hurt feelings in the past.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Slow to Trust. – Speckledleaf prefers not to open up to other felines or to give them any information he deems to be important. It makes developing genuine, two-sided friendships difficult for him, particularly if other cats pick up on the fact that he doesn’t trust them as much as he should.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Misunderstood. – His intentions have been mistaken many times over in the past. While he isn’t the dark, tragic style of misunderstood, it’s quite common for others to be confused about which direction Speckledleaf is trying to lead things and what he’s up to. He has no malicious intent—quite the contrary, when Speckledleaf is misunderstood, it is usually on the ‘positive’ side of the spectrum.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Poor Fishing. – For a Riverclan cat, especially one as skilled with their paws as Speckledleaf, his fishing abilities are appallingly low. He much prefers to do his hunting away from the water, whenever he has to, and for that reason, on the off chance he joins a hunting patrol to spend time with his clan mates, it is never near the river.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Crippling Fear of Failure. – Ever since his apprenticeship, Speckledleaf has hosted a paralyzing fear of failure. He tends to overcompensate in his duties for this reason, and is almost always at work in some form or fashion, and never far out of reach from his clan mates. The death of Larkstar practically crushed him.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Kithood.
[BREAK][BREAK]
00. Darkness. There is only darkness and warmth and mother. Tiny ears still deaf to the world around them twitch uselessly, and the brown kitten nestles close to his mother and siblings. One body next to his is so very tiny. Somewhere inside, the kit feels his first taste of both love and pity.
[BREAK][BREAK]
02. Speckledkit’s nose twitches as he creeps to the very entrance of the nursery, peering outside into the daylight with eyes still clinging to their kitten blues. He smells things that he has never smelled before, and his ears flick as sounds that seemed so far away before now have an origin—Outside. He knows he will explore it soon, but for now, the warmth of his mother’s belly beckons him back.
[BREAK][BREAK]
05. His brothers and sister clamber about alongside him. The hunters have returned with their prey, and each kit finds themselves more than eager to get a look at the fresh kills—and perhaps to even taste the meat for themselves. When an owl’s shadow glides over the campsite, Speckledkit feels his stomach drop to the base of his tail. Cats hiss and spit around him, and a flurry of movement sees them scrambling into the bracken. Speckledkit is dimly aware of being hoisted up in Pineheart’s maw. “I’m so sorry, little one,” she whispered, clinging to him with her forepaws to keep him from venturing out of the safety of the shadows, “I couldn’t carry you both.” Speckledkit’s brother, Thornkit, was never found.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Apprenticeship.
[BREAK][BREAK]
07. Speckledpaw crouches low in the tall reeds, eyes trained on a small water mouse not far ahead. Even amidst the mud from the recent rains, his nose brought him to the smell. It doesn’t strike him as strange or outstanding—his sharp nose is all he has ever known. When he returns with prey, more than once, he sees his mentor sitting with his mother and Pineheart. He thinks nothing of it.
[BREAK][BREAK]
09. “It smells just like this, but fresh stalks will be a richer green and much wider,” Pineheart tells him. Speckledpaw gives the plant a customary sniff, wincing as his nostrils are assaulted with the pungent smell of the dried, aged herb. “Can you find it for me?” His claws prick out into the dirt, and Speckledpaw nods his head. And he does.
[BREAK][BREAK]
13. Moons after being made Pineheart’s apprentice, Speckledpaw finds that sometimes he feels he knows too much. When leaf bare comes, his mind is constantly buzzing with the worry that he might smell green cough on his friend’s breath, or that someone may be injured and need an herb that doesn’t grow except for during green leaf. He worries. The worry is constant and oppressive, and he asks Pineheart if it will ever get better. She never does tell him.
[BREAK][BREAK]
24. As Speckledleaf grows, his anxiety for his clan mates and their wellbeing is tempered by the knowledge that he has gathered over the moons. He becomes more outwardly confident in his role and the choices that he makes, and begins to take over for the aging Pineheart. For three moons, all is well.
[BREAK][BREAK]
Medicine Cat.
[BREAK][BREAK]
27. His beloved mentor retires to the Elders den, and Speckledleaf assumes the official mantle of Medicine Cat. With his own mother long since passed, Pineheart remains his surrogate mother figure as well as his teacher, providing guidance when she could, even as sight and hearing began to fail her. Speckledleaf nursed her through her aging process, and clung to whatever pieces of advice she gave him, knowing that Pineheart wouldn’t be around much longer.
[BREAK][BREAK]
30. When the disease swept through the camp, Speckledleaf did everything that he could. His attentiveness and dedication saw many cats through the ravaging illness, but the leader he had known since kithood lost not one, but two lives while under his care. Speckledleaf lost several pounds during this time by overworking himself, skipping meals, and growing dangerously ill, himself. One of the cats he successfully treated was a grey tabby named Ripplekit. The young tom seemed taken with healing, even after witnessing some of its darkest moments, and so when the kit requested to be his apprentice, Speckledleaf saw to it that the request was approved.
[BREAK][BREAK]
32. Even the best healers can’t stop the progression of time, and with great sadness, Speckledleaf gave Pineheart a deadly mixture of herbs as well as poppy paste to ease the pain and help her sleep through her passing. Her request for such treatment struck a deep blow, but out of love for his mentor and knowing that her age caused her great pain, he complied. Pineheart passed easily in her sleep.
[BREAK][BREAK]
34. Not two moons after the death of his mentor, Speckledleaf found himself confronting another tragedy—the death of their leader, Larkstar. After a wound on her leg became infected, Speckledleaf was unable to find the proper herbs to treat the infection. Worse still—bargaining with other clans went nowhere. For the third and final time, Speckledleaf watched his leader die.
[BREAK][BREAK]
36. Under the new leadership of Echostar, Speckledleaf made a resolution to try and move past the recent tragedies that have been governing his life. He is more focused on continuing to pass on his knowledge to Ripplepool, but it’s clear that the weight of recent events still presses down heavily on his shoulders.
