Pumpkinpaw scampered up the tree, light on her paws, and perched triumphantly atop its branches. This was one of her specialties. Her high-energy lifestyle gave her endurance with her enthusiasm, and the ability to at times seem to defy gravity to scale strange heights. Today, it was up a tree to look for birds. However, this was perhaps one of the greatest challenges she could face when hunting. She did not have a lot of patience, which was required if she was to catch a bird from up among the branches, and she began to twitch rather quickly. [break][break]
Pumpkinpaw let her tail swing back and forth in harsh jerks, but was attempting to keep everything else as still and unwavering as the mighty oaks of the woodland. Her nose began to itch, and her claws sheathed and unsheathed themselves in a failing attempt to distract her muscles from their stiff and unused state. Finally, after what felt like an eternity—but was in fact only a few minutes—a robin landed on the branch just above Pumpkinpaw. She was so thrilled, she barely had time to focus on her jump, and instead sailed up, snagging the bird awkwardly from beneath the branch with her right paw. It began to squawk desperately, but the momentum of her fall and the luck of digging her claws into its tail feathers allowed her to rip it from the branch. [break][break]
Both bird and apprentice fell through the tree. Pumpkinpaw landed harshly on a lower branch, letting out a low “oof” as the wind was knocked completely out of her. The bird continued its fall, hitting the ground with great force and snapping its neck instantly. The entire act had not been glamorous, but it had in an odd way been effective. Pumpkinpaw was lucky in the fact that often her plans went entirely awry, but still yielded some form of success or another. [break][break]
Pumpkinpaw lay along the branch until she could breathe again, and then sat up, leaping down and bouncing off the trunk to hit the soft ground beneath her. She wheezed slightly, sniffing the bird to ensure that it was properly dead. Satisfied with the kill, she buried it among the roots of the tree, to return for it when she had finished her hunt for the day. [break][break]
“Worth it,” she muttered stubbornly as she finished covering the robin, fully aware that she would be dreadfully bruised the next day. Still, even without grace, Pumpkinpaw was able to get the job of a hunter done, and that was good enough for her.
