Sootstar had not planned on becoming leader so soon, and after being given a new apprentice, but it seemed that her life was meant to be so much more hectic now than she could have desired. With everything on her plate now, and her first Gathering fast approaching, it was quite a relief when she found that she would be able to dedicate a day to Sparrowpaw. She could not tell why she had been given the apprentice she had, but it seemed that, perhaps, it had been fate, or faith in her abilities. She’d been a social outcast much like Sparrowpaw had, and so Sootstar felt in a way a strange and special connection with the young apprentice. That and the fact that Sparrowpaw shared the same prefix as Sootstar’s dearest friend, and the old leader, Sparrowstar, making it a bit of a sentimental mentorship.

Sootstar had instructed Sparrowpaw to arrive at Talons Cliff bright and early for some climbing practice. It may have seemed a strange request, especially considering the apprentice was not as capable of maneuvering naturally as other cats, but Sootstar had taken all of this into account. She had decided that a bit of work climbing and pouncing in difficult terrain would benefit Sparrowpaw, and increase her movement capabilities. She saw the young apprentice as being full of great potential that simply needed to be unlocked. Nothing could stop a cat, especially one as willing to learn and prove themselves at Sootstar had been, and as Sparrowpaw now was. Sitting atop the cliff and admiring the landscape, Sootstar patiently awaited the arrival of her apprentice. It would be a busy day of training, but Sootstar had looked forward to it eagerly, and could not wait to spend time with a cat who might appreciate her unlike so many of her Clanmates.
